: Personal Information

I am currently a Ph.D student at School of Informatics, University at Buffalo, State University of New York.

In this knowledge-exploding age, there is a great need in the world for information exchanges and therefore, the need for people with advanced skills in information resources management. Information management has long been my favorite subject, and I have gained experiences in this area by helping both the computer beginners and field specialists solving their problems. Knowledge of Chinese, Russian, and English is my other great advantage and offers me an excellent opportunity to coordinate the information resources among the three languages.

Computer/information management has been one of my favorite areas of interest since my college days. When I was studying in the Department of Russian Language and Literature at the Chinese Cultural University in Taiwan, I designed a program to process the school's assignments between Chinese and Russian, and I often bought computer components to build computers that were suitable to my need. I also assisted a local programmer to develop and build the database of a Chinese-Russian electronic dictionary. After the two years of military service in the Air Force in Taiwan, I went to Russia to continue advanced study in Linguistics at the Saint-Petersburg State University. Most of the time I was the first person that my classmates, teachers, and friends look for when they had computer problems. In 1996, I helped the department solve the compatibility problems between different language versions of operating systems, which were using one computer to process Chinese, Russian and English. I also gave suggestions to some teachers to improve their computers' performance and helped them to set up specific computer structure in either hardware or software. I understand the problems, anxiety and frustration both the computer beginners and field specialists are facing.

My language background gives me further advantage to help more people to solve their problems related to information management. I am fluent in Chinese, Russian and English. Taiwanese and Chinese are my mother tongues. During my college years, I majored in Russian and later went studying and living in St. Petersburg for three years. With the intention of improving my English and of entering and study information resources management, a subject I like best, I came to the States about three years ago. Not only are English, Chinese, and Russian the three main languages in the world, but they also contain rich cultures and treasure of information. Now as being a Ph.D student, I want to do advanced researches in how to efficiently manage and use the resources of information to contribute our society.
